'Bossa Five-O' What does it mean?
Bossa Five-0 came together out of a mutual appreciation and respect for Brazilian music, and Bossa Nova in particular. We attempt to maintain the integrity of the music in the arrangements we've chosen, while at the same time giving ourselves room to personalize each song. Michaelle, our percussionist, deploys a variety of instruments -- such as the bongos, rebolo, pandeiro (tambourine), shakers, and bells - to capture and adapt the unique sounds and rhythms of Brazil.
Joe and Sonia, on tenor sax and flute, color nearly every piece with captivating harmonies, embellishments, and improvisations. Rob, our guitarist, lays down the characteristically complex chord progressions that support the melodies and solos, and between his right thumb and fingers, both holds the rhythm down and propels it forward with the understated swing that is unique to Bossa.
Christina, our vocalist, sings each piece in the Brazilian tongue, with the understated, non-vibrato tone typical to the genre. Through her love and passion for the music, she tries to embody the meaning of every lyric, and deliver it right through the language barrier to you.
